Columbus Polo is a member of the U.S. Polo Association (USPA). Please visit their website (www.us-polo.org) for more information about the game.

Polo is typically played on a 160 x 300-yard grass field. The object of the game is to score as many goals as possible by using a long mallet to knock a small, hard ball between the goal posts. Each team has four mounted players, and the mounts are usually thoroughbred horses. Each player does have a specific offensive or defensive position, although the game rapidly shifts between offense and defense and the positions are somewhat fluid. Because polo is played at the gallop, a fresh pony is usually ridden for each 7 minute 'chukka'.

A mounted referee is on hand to enforce the rules of the game. Because of the momentum of 8 galloping horses, polo has some common sense rules for safety. Within these bounds, players may strike or hook an opponent's mallet, push or bump his horse out of position, and steal the ball.
